DUBAI: A high-ranking UAE police officer has filed a discrimination case against a Saudi writer, The National reported yesterday, the first time the UAE’s new anti-discrimination law has been used. Lt Gen Dhahi Khalfan, Deputy Chief of Police and Public Security in Dubai, said Dr Mohammed Al-Hadif should be prosecuted for discriminating against the UAE by spreading hate on social media.
The law criminalizing all forms of discrimination on the grounds of religion, caste, creed, doctrine, race, color or ethnic origin was enacted on July 20. “Al-Hadeef should be arrested because his name is on the list of those who perpetuate hate,” said Khalfan via his Twitter account. It is still unclear how the UAE will summon Hadeef to prosecution. Hadeef has been a vocal critic of the UAE’s involvement in the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen to defeat Houthi rebels and the UAE’s relations with Iran.
