Why the hero’s welcome?

I was impressed last night to watch the US Congress receiving the returning son and hero Netanyahu. The minute Netanyahu arrived on the platform, the whole Congress was clapping. This I thought was ok, they are receiving a guest. Then as Benjamin started to give his famous speech, before he barely utters a word, the whole Congress broke into riotous applause. I thought to myself, am I watching the US Congress or some parliament in a dictatorship in the Third World. When the leader speaks, they all without understanding, stand up and clap.

Netanyahu received a hero’s welcome as if he’d returned from a horrific war. What has Netanyahu done for America to receive such a reception? What has the man accomplished or given to the American public that was deserving of such adulation?

I’m sure in the Knesset itself he never dreamed of such a reception. On the contrary, he receives otherwise and is at least sometimes challenged for his unproven and wildly inaccurate estimations of Iranian nuclear capabilities.

The other thing which surprised me was that such a powerful country with loads and loads of media sources failed to criticize his actions or his speech. It looks like a majority of the American media is controlled by or supportive of Israel, even when it comes something that is clearly insulting to a sitting US president.

Its humiliating for the American people and for their democratic system to be so blatantly abused by a foreign politician for his own political gain. It’s too much. Not to that extent. Ok be supportive of Israel and be supportive of its security and the survival of its people and its interest. But not to the point of the dignity and respect of the American president and American people.

I have no right to speak on the behalf of the American people. But like many I always look on America as a democracy with a decency and respect and what I saw yesterday was shameful. I’m sure if George Washington was alive or other US leaders they would have felt embarrassed, angered and humiliated by the US Congress why they allow a foreigner interfere in their politics and foreign policy. America is free and can do whatever it wants. It’s not up to Netanyahu.
