KUWAIT: The proposed Sabbiyah shrimp farming project expected to be a leading one is designed to achieve a production boom to meet the rising consumption rates. Through the project, that still needs to be approved by the Municipal Council, the Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAFR) aims to produce not less than 3,000 tons of Kuwaiti shrimp annually, that is double the quantity obtained from the Kuwaiti waters.

The idea of the project envisages building up to 300 earthen ponds on the Sabbia coast, where environment factors are favorable for the business, to provide different types of shrimp. According to the PAAFR feasibility study, the project will bring down shrimp prices, and more importantly, prawn will be available fresh through all through the year, even during the period of shrimp fishing. The project includes a factory to be built on an area of 1,750 square meters for handling and packing shrimp. – KUNA
