Nikah Jihad in Syria

Local and Arab newspapers shed light recently on a major crime which distorts the image of Islam and Arab women with so-called “Nikah Al- Jihad”, as Al-Rai daily published on Monday, Sept 23.

The newspaper wrote about the tragedy and suffering of a 19-year-old Tunisian woman who was badgered by religious sheikhs on satellite channels, and by one shaikh who convinced her that what she was wearing was “sinful”, and her walking on the street is “haram”.

She was also told that women can participate in jihad and kill the enemy by “entertaining” men after each battle. This girl named Lamya, left Tunis and went to Libya and then to Turkey before reaching Aleppo, Syria, where she was surprised by the number of women and young girls staying in an old hospital which had become a camp for “sin jihadists”. She was received by the camp commander, a Yemeni, from Omar Brigade, and he was the first to enjoy her, and she said that she doesn’t know the number of deviants who had sex with her. She also confessed to having sex with Pakistanis, Afghanis, Libyans, Tunisians, Iraqis, Saudis and Somalis in Syria. She said that she was insulted by these men who did not hesitate to use violence and forced her into submission in the most degrading and inhumane way possible. She is now pregnant and both mother and unborn child have tested HIV positive; so now who is responsible for this crime?

The question is how were these young Arab women convinced to go to Syria to entertain those who call themselves muhajideen? Who was the great one who came up with this idea which we have never come across earlier because as far as I know, there is no mention of it in Islam, in the Holy Quran or Sunna which justifies this thought.

What disturbs and worries me as an Arab and Muslim human-being, is the silence of religious scholars in the Arab world, particularly Saudi and Kuwait, who have not raised their voice against this.

The most Shaikh Al-Oraifi from Saudi did was deny what was published in papers about him. The question is this: Why didn’t any of the religious shaikhs condemn adulterous crimes being committed by those who call themselves mujahideen? We would like to ask Shaikh Mohammad Al- Awadhi who attacked liberals in papers and accused them of not caring for their religion – only because they called for co-education at the university.

Why are the hardline sheikhs silent against those who distort Islam’s image and pure Arab traditions which reject such crimes against women? Political Islamic groups are collecting donations in Kuwait, and sending men for jihad in Syria and have declared that their goal is to establish an Islamic caliphate state.

Now after the truth has been revealed, the public in Kuwait and the Arab world should know the reality behind these political Islamic groups. — Al-Watan
