National and liberation days

Those two glorious anniversaries are very important for everybody in Kuwait - citizens and expatriates - who impatiently await them to celebrate every year. This year, however, their joy is multiplied by the honoring of HH the Amir as Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center. We wish September 9 is also considered a national anniversary to be celebrated just like the national days, because on this day in 2014, the Amir was honored as the Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center by the UN.

This year, we are celebrating Kuwait’s 54th National Day and 24th Liberation Day. Kuwait independence was declared on June 19, 1961 during the reign of the late Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, who assumed power in 1950. His coronation was on February 25, and thus everybody agreed to merge both anniversaries in one, and ever since Kuwait has been celebrating its national day on February 25. Kuwait has been steadily achieving much in terms of development and progress for the Kuwaiti people as well as citizens’ welfare under the wise leadership of the Al-Sabah family since independence. Thanks to its wise leadership in handling various regional and international issues and its constant work to achieve international security and peace, Kuwait is also keen on building and cementing relationships with Arab, friendly and international countries.

Humanely, Kuwait never hesitated to reach its hands out to help and aid brotherly and friendly countries in times of distress and disasters. Kuwait has made annual contributions to the UN’s Commission for Refugees Affairs, sent relief aid to the victims of the tsunami throughout the Indian Ocean, to earthquake victims in Iran and Morocco in addition to humanitarian relief aid to Zimbabwe and Niger to alleviate the sufferings resulting from drought and famine there. It also sent financial aid to Lebanon in the aftermath of the war in addition to constant aid to the Palestinian people.

We have to review the independence day, during which Kuwait turned a leaf of a long history during which ancestors gave the best examples of strife and hard work to achieve decent living conditions and defend their land, and started a new phase of a fully sovereign state working on proving its presence and contributing in peacemaking and building the lives of human beings.
