KUWAIT: The Islamic State (IS) terrorist group poses a threat not only to Iraq, but the entire region as well, the visiting Iraqi parliament speaker warned yesterday. “We believe that Iraq’s problems are related to the regional situation, and this is why we decided to visit Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan and Turkey to try to cooperate with other countries to resolve the problems of Iraq and other countries and send a clear message to leaders around the world that we have to be in harmony and compatibility,” Saleem Al-Jabouri said during a press conference in Kuwait City Sunday night. “The Islamic Parliaments Summit will be held in 2016, and we want to make sure that all Islamic countries will attend the conference in Baghdad,” he added.

Mosque attack Jabouri condemned the terrorist attack on Imam Al-Sadiq Mosque in Kuwait that left 26 people dead and 227 wounded. He praised the wisdom of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who visited the site of the mosque minutes after the bombing, adding that Kuwait has faced the attack with firm security measures, and Kuwaitis have exhibited the best example of national unity and standing behind their leadership in confronting terrorism.

Cooperation Jabouri said all countries are studying the dangers of IS, and there will be cooperation between Iraq and Kuwait to develop well thought out plans to counter the threat to Arab countries in the framework of security and political cooperation. “The international society should know the importance of cooperating with Iraq to face terrorism to serve not only the local society, but also the region to achieve security and stability,” Jabouri said. He noted that the visit is on behalf of all Arab countries concerned with Iraq’s stability and welfare, adding that countering challenges in Iraq is the responsibility of the entire world.

Iraq’s divisions “It is not true that Iraq’s divisions will destroy Iraq - Iraqis are strong and trying hard to resolve problems through meetings and conferences, and there are still a lot of options for reconciliation of all parties. We are focusing on the necessity to achieve Iraqi unity. Iraq has two parties - one believes in weapons and terrorism, while the other party wants to build the country by laws. These are the ones who should be supported,” the Iraqi speaker said.

Sectarian groups “I cannot deny the presence of sectarian groups in Iraq that are trying to create a rift between Iraqis, but we are watching them. We have to create a country that believes in Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds, Turkmen and other minorities to make them live in harmony, and this is the main goal that we are trying to reach, because there are some people in Iraq who want the country to end up with groups like IS and those who bear weapons,” Jabouri said.
